The Anne Curtis Syndrome

I could still tolerate the local singers of today who come out with albums and live shows full of recycled materials. But when I learned of celebrities who cannot sing having best selling albums and jampacked concerts, my level of tolerance has finally reached its peak. Like a pus filled fluid bursting out of an abscess, I have to vent my frustration against this gross insult to intelligence by money driven producers and cunning celebrities. Gretchen Barretto. Dennis Trillo. Gabby Concepcion. Bea Alonzo. Aljur Abrenica. They are just few of the culprits who are guilty of using their celebrity stature as a license to record albums and perform as “singers.” But among those who joined the celebrity-turned-singer bandwagon, no one is as successful as Anne Curtis. I have no beef with Anne Curtis… until this happened.

As if it is the mysterious Bermuda Triangle, it baffles me how people could derive listening pleasure from albums by Anne Curtis and company. Aside from being run-of-the-mill and poorly conceptualized, these albums contain mostly bad covers of old songs. I’d rather be publicly scandalized by Annabelle Rama than buy and listen to these albums. Neither artistic nor entertaining, the sole purpose of these record albums by those celebrities turned singers is to milk money out of their zealous fans.

A concert is supposed to be a celebration of an artist’s music. Marred with smorgasbord guest stars, comedy skits and variety show-like segments, some local concerts these days are nothing but a farce. I find it strange how people could spend thousands of pesos on something they are already accustomed in seeing on television. When I learned of the sold out concert of Anne Curtis from a news clip, it further strengthens my conviction that the success of celebrities in our country is based more on media hype and the gullibility of the masses.

Unless you’re a novelty singer, music is a serious profession. Only those with pure talent can carve their niche in this business. Anne Curtis may have had admonished beforehand that what she is doing as a “singer’ is all for fun. On several occasions, she may have even mocked herself for being out of tune. Sly that she is, she even marketed her forgettable singing as a butt of ridicule to amuse her audience. But one thing is definite beyond this façade: Anne Curtis is making big money out of it at the expense of her fanatic followers.

We are a celebrity obsessed nation. No matter how crappy they are, people would patronize any materials from famous celebrities. Smart and enterprising, producers and stars have wisely exploited this notion to make more money. Some may argue that as long as the consumers are being entertained I have no business in meddling with their affairs. It’s their money anyway. Yet, to continue with this horrible cycle is like putting a stake to the hearts of genuine artists who could offer quality songs and praise-worthy performances. Bigots may accuse me of indulging in crab mentality. But to charge me with it is like saying all these aforementioned celebrities are real, perfect and faultless musical talents. Avid fans may dispute that I am depriving Anne Curtis and company of their artistic freedom. But what artistic freedom is there to restrict when there is no art at all. It annoys me when people find what these celebrities are doing as amusing. Everytime I hear someone says how “cute” an artista is while singing out of tune, I always wish I have a plastic bag full of urine.

The promoters do this for one reason: they can. Some people just have no standards. No one has ever gone broke underestimating the discretion of the pinoy audience.

Music is entertainment. People follow her for nothing but fun and amusement. She's an epitome of a dream, of an ambisyosa which is a comic relief for most of us who are untalented but dreamers. I didn't watch her concert nor have i bought her album.

I respect everything that you said, but gullible is a not so nice word to use for educated people who follow her.

People are entitled to their own opinion. It's already articulated well why Doc is not amused yet there is a counter "relax , enjoy a little"? With no iota of reason. And of course anonymous. No logic and no guts. Go hand in hand.

educated? well, someone who went to anne's concert or buy her album is simply dumb and stupid... PERIOD. Any intellectual, and well-cultured person would feel disgusted, and would not buy her crap. Come on, what she did is an insult to our intellect, and unfortunately, only few filipinos can think critically. It is really disgusting that she did all those shitty stuff... She should have stayed being the stupid bimbo actress that she is.

You're obviously a person deprived with happiness. You seem to be writing pieces not to help people but to demean/criticize them. Anne Curtis will not be successful if her disposition in life is like yours, full of negativity. If I were you, I'd rather change my ways to live a fulfilling life. Be happy with others success! cheers ;)

--BANG!
Why is it so hard for SOME actors&actresses to stay within their chosen profession?
Be a singer or a dancer -IF you can really SING or DANCE or do BOTH!
Come on, most of them are rich already. What do they need the extra moolah for???

Obviously, ang alam lang ng blogger na to ay ang magcritize at gawing katatawanan ang iba. By making this, nagkakapangalan sya.

Entertainment industry is not for the good actors and good singers. If you can entertain your audience well, then you're a good entertainer, no matter what you do as long as it is healthy entertainment.

Buti pa doc, total, critisizing people lang naman alam mo, go on and critize those corrupt officials of the government instead those people who tried t make a living.

I'm a 20 year-old female and I somewhat share the sentiment. That being said, I already expect possible readers to accuse me of bashing.
How come criticizing famous and gorgeous people is almost always seen as simply being jealous of their stature? Don't we have the right to have an opinion on ordinary people and celebrities alike?
The first few times Anne Curtis sang in her trademark off-key style was okay. In fact, I found it cute too. But when it became a habit, it just got on my nerves. Worse, it seems like a lot of other young female celebrities are jumping on this it's-cute-to-sing-off-key-on-purpose bandwagon. I understand that being a singer was just her wild dream so it would've been okay with me if proceeds from her album and concert go to good cause.
Seeing a non-singer have a sold-out concert while a lot of amazing artists out there struggle to get a venue to perform is just quite sad.

I believe that the culprit here are capitalistic producers and the OPM committee that cannot stand up to them. Recently, the OPM committee raised their sentiments about the concerts of numerous foreign artists here in the country. But do they have any efforts of promoting, QUALITY artists? Did they try limiting albums that contain only revivals? How much have they encouraged NEW and INNOVATIVE composers and bands and solo artists to be invested on by these producers? And by ratio, how many singers produced by infamous reality shows have used NEW and ORIGINAL songs?

I guess if people have more options, rather, more exposure to BETTER options then they would know the real essence of a "musical celebration." People who understand better cannot name them stupid nor blame them if an entertainer's show will be sold out. We cannot compete with fun.

Remember, "sense" will no way condescend to the concept of "fun". They are two different things on two different levels. So if we want people's decisions to "make some sense", we have got to inform them sensible situations and options actually exist in the market. Hence, if they want to have fun, let them! Because anyway, it's a totally different thing. We should not be bothered by such things, because as you put it, it is shallow. And everyone's entitled to their own craziness.

And my final message to those capitalist producers, try to re-learn how to put some integrity to your jobs. Such a shame.
